Boyzone

Boys? Tick. In the zone? Double-tick. And so Boyzone was born. Made up of Ronan Keating, Stephen Gately, Mickey Graham, Shane Lynch and Keith Duffy, the five became an international phenomenon, scoring 16 consecutive Top 5 singles in the UK from 1994-1999. Keating was the blond baby, Gately the cheeky chappy and the other three smirked in the background. Wholesome to the extreme and churning out upbeat pop and heartfelt ballads, Boyzone got the mix just right, appealing equally to gay boys, teenage girls and housewives. From Father And Son to No Matter What via a melodic cover of Tracy Chapman's Baby Can I hod You, their Daz-white career and staying power was incredible. They called it a day around the turn of the century, and Ronan went on to cover a myriad of Garth Brooks and Kenny Rogers hits, Stephen came out and the other three did something or other.
But that's not the end of the story. After seeing Take That and New Kids come back, Boyzone decided there was something in it for them too and duly reformed. They've traded in their jeans for shiny suits and stubble and comeback single Love You Anyway was, whisper it, a quiet slice of pop brilliance. However, plans for a full comeback and new album were dealt a cruel blow in October 2009 when singer Stephen Gately died tragically while on holiday in Majorca - R.I.P.
