Girls Aloud

Received wisdom said that after Hear'Say, reality TV pop groups were dead. Clearly Girls Aloud weren't listening. In 2002, they duly trounced their rival boy band One True Voice to the Christmas No. 1 slot with the fantastically punky Sound Of The Underground, and the Pop Stars winners duly lived up to the show's title.
But who could have forseen their enduring popularity? In today's increasingly female pop scene, Nadine Coyle, Cheryl Cole (nee Tweedy), Kimberley Walsh, Sarah Harding and Nicola Roberts have lavished their unique blend of sex appeal, garish eye shadow and in-your-face infectious pop on the UK, and it's been lapped up by fans and serious music journos alike. Girls Aloud it seems, along with the Sugababes, are the pop stars it's cool to like - and hits like Biology, Love Machine and Sexy, No, No, No prove why. Indeed, the Observer Music Monthly named Biology as the single of the decade: quite an accolade.
The ladeez keep on producing the goods too, with reviews of 2007's Tangled Up carpetted wall-to-wall with glowing superlatives. 2008's Out Of Control had some gems too - not least The Promise - but could the group show be showing signs of splitting, with Cheryl becoming a National Treasue, Sarah dabbling in acting and Nadine moving to LA?
